Pattern Language for Game Design — Pattern Library: Make Trading Meaningful

Design Problem: Obtaining an item may not feel meaningful when abundant resources can be used to trade for an item a player wants.

Description: Items in games need to be valuable because otherwise, the players will have no desire for them unless there are sentimental values in them. This can be solved by goal-oriented trades, where to trade with someone you must bring them a specific item or achieve a certain goal.
